The public is invited to comment on the content of and preferred alternative in the Army Corps of Engineers’ Draft Letter Report, including draft Environmental Assessment, on the Grays Harbor Long Term Maintenance Strategy. A public meeting will be held this Thursday, May 3 in Aberdeen to discuss. In addition the Corps has recently extended the public comment deadline to June 15th for input on the proposal.
A very short summary of the Corps' proposal is that they intend to:
1) continue to nourish the beach in Half Moon Bay under certain situations when they fear a jetty breach using sand dredged from the mouth of the harbor.
2) build a 500 foot extension off the jetty into Half Moon Bay.
According the Corps Environmental Assessment (EA), the extension will not impact surfing and the environmental impacts will be minor. However, outreach is ongoing for any input that can help offer additional opinions on this.
Sections of the EA that describe their selected alternative in more detail and a drawing are available in the Corp website. It would be great to get as much feedback as possible on this proposal so please take a moment to draft anything you have for the May 3 hearing or for the later submission date of June 15.
